Filters and attachments
In contrast to correction filters which help to achieve normal , realistic color , special effects filters and attachments introduce an element of fantasy or surrealism to your portraits . They are all deliberately designed to create a pic torial effect not present in the original scene As always in portraiture , you should consider the person you are photographing before you use an effect filter . Even if the viewer knows nothing about your subject , your own satisfac tion will be much greater if , in your opinion the special effect you use matches your sitter's personality .
Although the majority of special filters and attachments whether starburst gratings multi - image filters , dual color filters , double exposure masks , or prisms - are intended as amusing gadgets , you will occasionally find them useful for more serious interpretive portraiture .
Modern filter systems offer a huge range of possibilities , especially in the field of varying or modifying color to achieve a specific mood . If you approach these filters in the way that you regard a zoom lens for example ( that is as a technical aid to help your interpretation rather than as an end in itself ) you may well achieve some worthwhile results .
Some special filters can be used in unusual ways , and it is worth experimenting and trying to think up new ways of using these attach ments which will create original and interesting portraits . For example I used a prism attach ment unconventionally for the shot on p . 129 .
Using a color filter to convey mood The painter Jeffrey Camp is noted for his unusual images and dreamlike subject matter . To create this moody effect , I used artificial light film in daylight with a strong magenta filter on my lens . Mamiyaflex C3 , 65 mm . 1/15 sec at f8 , Ektachrome 160 .
Portrait in a prism ▷ Instead of inserting the prism in the lens hood as you normally do . I placed it on a small platform on a tripod . You may have to try your prism in several positions before you get the desired effect . Pentax 6x7 , 200 mm and No. 1 close - up ring , 1/8 sec at f22 , Ektachrome 160 .
Shaped masks These masks give an effect reminiscent of the oddly masked Daguerreotypes . You can buy a dozen or so ready - made shapes , but it is not difficult to make your own from black cardboard . For a reasonably sharp outline you should either stop down to a very small aperture or hold the mask at a distance from the lens . Pentax 6x7 , 105 mm , 1/8 sec at f22 , Ektachrome 160 .
