Glamorous and romantic portraits
attitude . Romantic portraits and glamor por traits often overlap - it is sometimes difficult to draw a line between the two . But romantic portraits are usually very gentle , pretty images of young girls and women , often taken with a soft focus attachment ( see p . 69 ) .
The way that you light your subject for this type of portrait is of utmost importance . Only very rarely will strong , contrasty lighting be successful . In the majority of cases you should use the " Hollywood " lighting set - up ( see p .
32 ) . And the pose should be carefully worked out the lines of your subject's body must be smooth and graceful , without any harsh angles or ugly shapes . The line of the neck , shoulders , chest and arms in particular play an important part . There is no special formula for a romantic or glamorous shot - every subject will require a different approach . The moment you forget about the individual personality of your sitter and start working toward a prototype of glamor your shot will end up as a mere " pin - up " .
Unusual lighting V This portrait was shot with strong light rather than the usual soft , diffused light . I used strong light because it suited my subject's bright red dress and blonde hair , and because the pattern of light and shade gives the lines of her body a feline air which is underlined by the black fur on which she is kneeling . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm . 1/8 sec at f11 , Ektachrome 160 .
◄ Choosing a setting Here the girl's casual air is her most attractive feature . All the elements of the picture are planned to bring this out - her pose , shoes , socks and belt . And the outdoor setting is very important the girl sprawls on the logs in an ungainly . yet seductive manner . A glamor shot should be fairly close - up - the framing of the picture left gives a much stronger image than the more distant view below . Pentax 8x7 , 75 mm , 1/30 sec at f11 , Agfachrome 50S .
Exotic glamor ▷ This type of glamor shot recreates the " femme fatale " of the silent movies through pose , look , dress and lighting . The expression and eyes were most important , and once this was established the rest of the arrangement fell into place . The formal pose of the hands follows the line of the collar which in turn frames the exotic necklace . Pentax 6 × 7 , 105 mm , 1/15 sec at f16 , Plus - X .
