Photojournalism
The quality of reproduction is beyond your control - only high - quality magazines , using expensive paper , will successfully reproduce the subtle tones of black and white prints . On coarser materials , such as those used by news papers and most large circulation magazines most of the details will be lost . Consequently photographs must be simple and strong in tone as well as very sharp . In practice , it is best to make a slightly harder than normal print , otherwise your picture may appear too soft and gray when reproduced .
With color shots most printers prefer a fully saturated image , so you should have an accurate exposure . Unlike negative film , which has some latitude , overexposure will destroy high light areas .
You should always give the editor a choice of formats both horizontal and vertical because he may require a specific picture shape to fill an available gap . More often than not , your picture will be trimmed , or " cropped so leave some space on all sides .
Photographing a tragic situation Photojournalists often have to capture the tragic aspects of life . Try to be sensitive and sympathetic to your subject without hiding the true nature of the situation . This picture typifies the unhappy final months of the painter Roger Hilton . When I took this photograph in his tiny cottage in Cornwall he was already very weak and mostly confined to bed . Photographing in the street D Do not hesitate to photograph children in the street- they are usually fascinated by cameras . I took this shot in Portobello Road to illustrate an article on the London street markets . Mamiyaflex C3 , 80 mm , 1/125 sec at f8 , Plus X.
