Snapshot and instant pictures
The snapshot is no longer totally despised by serious critics of photography . On the con trary , some consider it a valid form of por traiture , mainly because snapshots are most often taken by close members of the family , and are usually very natural and spontaneous .
There is no better snapshooting camera than an SX - 70 instant picture camera . The kind of incredulous awe that greeted the first demon stration of the Daguerreotype in 1839 is still present when you watch the square print emerge from the bottom of the SX - 70 camera . Suddenly the picture begins to form , and in about one minute a complete full color image appears right in front of your eyes . The controls on the special cameras are limited - no adjust ment of f stop or shutter speed is possible , and the lens is fixed . Nevertheless , it is feasible to alter the overall exposure slightly using the camera's lighten / darken control .
In spite of the constraints of the system which precludes any printing controls , some photographers do achieve highly artistic results from Polaroid instant materials . Many use peel - apart film because it fits special backs for 24 square or large format cameras , allowing greater control of the image quality . Marie Cosindas - a noted exponent of instant portraiture - gives Polacolor film a fairly long exposure , and then prolongs the development time . You can also create interesting effects not from the result but from the by - product that is usually thrown away . Transfer the peel away part with the residual image onto an ordinary sheet of paper , and thoroughly blot it to obtain an unusual , impressionistic image .
Snapping the reaction . Your subject can examine an instant portrait almost immediately , and this is a good opportunity to take another shot . With some earlier cameras it was not possible to shoot close ups , but the new version is able to take pictures as close as 1 ft ( 7 cm ) . Take care that the flash does not blind your subject . Polaroid SX - 70 Alpha , SX - 70 Time Zero Supercolor .
Getting the right exposure When a large area of the picture is in shadow , the result tends to be over exposed . You can alter this by adjusting the lighten / darken control on the camera . Polaroid SX - 70 Alpha , SX - 70 Time Zero Supercolor .
Polaroid SX - 70 Alpha ▷ This model is a sophisticated example of the instant picture camera . It offers SLR viewing , automatic focusing on the sonar principle ( with the option of manual focusing ) , and an exposure compensation device . A few seconds after you release the electronic shutter , the print emerges from a slot at the base of the camera and starts to develop . The sensitive film sandwich used with this camera produces a picture of full intensity 60 sec after ejection .
Instant portraiture If you give the same attention to your instant pictures as you give to your 35 mm portraiture , choosing the background and the sitter's pose carefully , you can create a very effective portrait . Polaroid SX - 70 Alpha , SX - 70 Time Zero Supercolor .
Special effect portrait ▷ There is an element of chance in this method of transferring the " reject " part of an instant peel apart image onto ordinary paper . You will never get the entire picture , only fragments of it , so choose simple , uncluttered images . Polaroid 600 , Polacolor II .
