Humorous and candid portraits
Humor is an elusive commodity - what makes one person laugh may not even raise a smile with another . A photographer of humor is instinctively aware of all the small quirks and oddities of human behavior , and will react instantly when these moments occur . Often , humorous portraits are best if they are candid shots , taken when the subject is completely unaware that he is being photographed .
One of the foremost humorists of the camera is Robert Doisneau . He discovers many funny situations , and even creates them as in his series showing various people's reactions to a painting of a nude in a shop window , cap tured with a hidden camera . Another well known exponent is Elliott Erwitt . Neither of these great photographers is in any way cruel . It is important to be able to make gentle fun of your subjects , but not to ridicule people .
A photographer is usually within his rights to photograph people in public places without asking their permission . The only injunction is on publishing photographs of defamatory nature . If you make someone look so ridiculous that it may be detrimental to his character or reputation , you risk a law suit .
