Sequence portraits
A sequence portrait is a portrait in depth . It is a succession of separate pictures designed to be seen together as one portrait . Every image in the sequence should show a different aspect of the personality of the sitter . Although a single portrait can reveal a great deal about its sub ject on many different levels , it is often impossible to present the viewer with sufficient information on the sitter's character , tempera ment , professional involvement , and home life in one picture . A sequence portrait can perform this function admirably .
Making a sequence usually involves photo graphing the subject on many occasions , preferably over a period of several days , por traying him in different aspects of his everyday life . You might choose to assemble a " day - in the - life " sequence , or put together a series of pictures that show the sitter in different moods , activities and situations . The final presentation of the sequence can also vary - for example , you can mount a " mosaic " of small prints of different shapes and sizes on a single sheet of mounting board , or present the collection as a book with each page devoted to a different facet of your subject's life or character .
Choosing a theme A The pictures on these pages form a sequence portrait of Daley Thompson , the Olympic decathlon gold medalist . I followed his activities for several weeks to take this series of pictures . Sequence portraits demand that you " stalk your prey " all the time - observing and shooting . After a while your subject will get so used to seeing you that he or she will no longer be aware of your camera . Nikon FE , 50 mm , 1/125 sec at f11 , FP4 .
Looking for facial expressions In order to build a success ful sequence you must try to capture expressions . For this shot I placed my camera on a tripod and focused , waiting for exactly the right expression of concentration on the subject's face before pressing the shutter release . Nikkormat FT2 , 80-200 mm zoom , 1/125 sec at f11 , FP4 .
Low viewpoint I took this shot from a low position - in fact , I was lying on the ground - so that the empty stands and the sky provide an excellent background for the figure of the athlete . The low viewpoint also tends to exaggerate the subject's size and stature . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm , 1/60 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 200 .
Using a motor drive V I used a motordrive to get this picture . From the suc cession of frames I took while my subject was in the air I chose the shot that showed the most interesting position during the jump . Nikon FE , 50 mm , 1/250 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 200 .
Showing the subject's possessions Here , Thompson displays all the equipment he needs for the decathlon . These were carefully arranged on the field to provide a triangular pattern with the athlete at the apex of the composition . Pentax 6x7 , 55 mm , 1/30 sec at f22 , Ektachrome 200 .
