direct light looks very different to the same face illuminated by diffuse , delicate light - the mood switches instantly from severity to softness . For the same reason , it is very important to watch how the light illuminates the sitter's whole figure , and his or her surroundings . The overall effect of light has been used to give the picture on the facing page a period atmo sphere , and to add a touch of romanticism to the shot on p . 97. Another important factor in creating mood is pose and expression . The hard , direct gaze in the shot below contrasts very strongly with the dreamy posture and expression in the photograph on the facing page . And the odd position of the girl's clown like head adds to the strange quality of the picture on p . 96. Contrast this with her graceful pose in the portrait on p . 97. Finally , the props you choose and the environment in which you place your subject will also help you to control your result . For example , the house chosen as a setting for the picture on p . 99 creates a period atmosphere , whereas the props used for the shot on p . 96 give it an oriental mood .
A " modernist " This composition portrait uses stark black and white , with hardly any half tones , for a futuristic look . I used two background papers - black on one side , white on the other . Lighting was hard , with very little fill - in , see diagram below . And I overexposed the film slightly to give an overlit effect on the face . To help the stark mood the sitter made up her eyes with dark shadow and used a strong red lipstick . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm , 1/60 sec at f16 , FP4 .
Creating a period mood ▷ I took this photograph in a house in London which was once occupied by a Pre - Raphaelite artist . The long white dress helps the transformation . To enhance the atmosphere I wanted to retain the feeling of existing light on the room's wooden paneling . However , I had to bounce a flash off the ceiling to light my subject's face . Pentax 6x7 , 55 mm , 1/15 sec at f16 , Tri - X .
