Trying different styles
The early photographers claimed that the camera could not lie , that it documented the reality in front of it , and recorded without bias Fortunately this is not the whole story - the camera is also a great interpretive instrument which will record precisely what the photo grapher wants it to record .
The pictures here and on the following pages were all shot in two sessions and are all portraits of the same girl . However , each one has been photographed in a different style proving that a thoughtful photographer can achieve a subjective interpretation of most sitters at will . The variation is arrived at not just with the camera alone but by using different lights , color schemes , arrangements , environ ments , props , make - up and expressions . The combination of all or some of these elements creates a different mood each time .
Apart from make - up , which can alter the face considerably , light is the most important factor in changing appearance . A face lit by hard ,
The femme fatale ▷ Some oriental carpets , a strange turban , a carved chair , and a little make - up transform my sitter into an oriental femme fatale from the silent movies . I used one tungsten - halogen lamp fitted with an amber filter in order to give a warm color cast . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm , 1/15 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 160 .
The clown Simple props - a red eiderdown , and a piece of silk together with strong make - up on eyes and cheeks turn the subject into a clown . I took this shot in the studio , using tungsten floodlighting . In order to keep the whole picture warm in color I used a red gelatin filter over the spot that lit the background . - Pentax 6x7 , 105 mm , 1/15 sec at f16 , Agfachrome 50L .
A ladylike portrait ▷ For this soft , romantic image my subject wore hardly any make - up . The main lighting was diffused daylight . Fill - in on the left side was provided by a tungsten floodlight fitted with a blue conversion filter , see diagram below , to maintain the color balance for daylight film . Pentax 6x7 , 75 mm , 1/8 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 200 .
