Action shots
Action portraits are shots which capture your subject in motion . The focus of attention must be the expression on your subject's face . You are aiming for a portrait , not just a picture that conveys a sense of action . With fast film and a motor drive there should be no difficulty out doors . But when taking portraits of someone performing or working indoors there are a number of problems . Combined with natural light , flash tends to falsify the mood of the situation , and with stage lighting you will have color balance problems . Also , at some events , flash is forbidden . As an alternative , use fast film , or a tripod and longer exposures .
You can make use of the blur that move ment and long exposure create to give the impression of action to your portrait . However , if you want to stop movement it is important to wait for the peak of action . Even in a fast action there is usually a fraction of a second when the subject is still - a dancer , for example , will seem motionless at the highest point of a leap . If you press the shutter release at this moment you may be able to catch a sharp image with a shutter speed as slow as 1/8 sec . In situations where the lighting is very poor , try " pushing " film - underexposing it and then extending the development time .
Blur for effect In general , flash is not allowed at performances so you will have to push your film , set a slow shutter speed and wide aperture , and use a tripod to get a good exposure . Some areas will show blur , but this can often add to the impression of action . Pentax Spotmatic , 50 mm , 1/15 sec at f3.5 , Ektachrome 160 pushed 2 stops .
Using stage lighting This shot was taken in a theater where flash was forbidden . Therefore , I used a tripod and a slow shutter speed , catching the dancers at a moment when their movement had stopped . Pentax Spotmatic , 50 mm , 1/15 sec at f4 , Ektachrome 400 .
Coping with lighting problems ▷ Because my subject was quite still during his work , I was able to use a slow shutter speed to emphasize the spray of the sparks . I used a single tungsten floodlight and tungsten film . Some daylight from outside has given a blue cast to part of the picture , but this adds to the mood . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm , 1/30 sec at f5.6 , Agfachrome 50L .
Stopping action ▷ I used fast film and a motor drive on my 35 mm camera to catch the peak of the action . On a championship tennis court it is often difficult to get a clear background behind the player as well as getting a good , strong expression and the right body position all at the same time . Try to sit near the front because it is best to shoot from a fairly low angle , using the scoreboard as a plain background . Nikon FE , 80-200 mm zoom , 1/250 sec at f16 , Plus - X .
