Larger groups
Good portraiture relies on a rapport between photographer and sitter , and also on the photographer's ability to control the subject without appearing to direct or bully him into pre - conceived poses . However , group por traiture is different . First , you cannot have a tête - à - tête with several people at once , and , second , it is impossible to control the move ments and expressions of all the subjects , especially if some are children . Since it is highly unlikely that a large group of people will assume , miraculously , an orderly and pleasing arrangement , the only solution is to apply strict control from the start .
Select a location which is interesting visually but fairly uncluttered , so that attention is focused on the sitters , not their environment Place your camera on a tripod , and stop down well . Depth of field must cover the whole group , so in weaker light use a fairly slow shutter speed and ask your sitters to stay still for the exposure .
Avoid regular or symmetrical arrangements these give dull , predictable results ( look at most school or team pictures ) . Place people at different levels and at varying distances from the camera , so that their heads never form a straight line . And ask them to assume different postures and attitudes . Try to be as inventive in your groupings as possible - adding interest by isolating some figures , and forming others into a small unit . For inspiration , you might like to look at seventeenth century Dutch portraits , especially those by Hals and Rembrandt .
Coping with numbers Controlling a large number of sitters , especially if some are children , is practically impossible . Here , I asked some of the subjects to sit next to the television set , and told the rest to huddle close to their " spiritual mother " Erin Pizzey . The children kept moving all the time . and I had to remind them to keep still . I took several shots to get this picture . Pentax 6x7 , 55 mm , 1/30 sec at f11 , Tri - X .
Group in close - up ▷ This composition was carefully arranged in a symmetrical manner to unite the idiosyncratic appearances of the members of this musical group . I used one large flood at the left , another reflected from a screen to act as a fill - in , and a third lamp on the background . Pentax 6x7 , 75 mm , 1/30 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 160 .
Formal arrangement A For this formal shot of a Spanish family , I positioned each person separately . asking them to pose in a certain way . By the time the whole picture was set up and I was ready to shoot , all the subjects had relaxed slightly , giving the picture a natural look . The sitter's heads are arranged to form a distinct semi circle , see diagram above . with the verticals of the windows and doors breaking the visual monotony . Pentax 6x7 , 55 mm 1/60 sec at f16 , Agfachrome 50S .
