Babies and toddlers
Babies and toddlers can be easy subjects - they are totally unaware of the camera , and therefore refreshingly unselfconscious . For this same reason , however , young children are also difficult to work with , because the photo grapher cannot control them . They move constantly and tire easily , especially under strong , direct lights . Have soft , diffused lights that are strong enough to allow you to use fast shutter speeds ( at least 1/125 sec ) , because babies never keep still . Harsh lighting , with its strong contrasts of light and dark , is totally unsuitable . Instead , you should use either diffused daylight , bounced flash ( see p . 150 ) , or flash fill - in diffused with a handkerchief .
The expressions of babies are often so fleet ing that you may not notice momentarily closed eyes or a slight frown , so shoot liberally to make sure of a good result . Avoid deliber ately posing a child - a natural situation gives a better photograph . Choose a plain light toned background , and place babies in their mother's arms , or have her close by to give reassurance . In general , it is best to shoot on the child's own level photographing from above can create a feeling of formality and distance . And , as distortion of a child's face is unpleasant , avoid using a wide - angle lens .
Mother and children This seemingly informal portrait was taken for a magazine . Although it looks like a family snapshot , it was carefully arranged to get exactly the right expressions and grouping . I had to take a number of shots because the children were restless The light was dull so I used flash to fill in , diffused with a handkerchief . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm 1/30 sec at f8 , Agfachrome 100R .
Catching the moment When I saw the baby turn I shot quickly with toddlers you should be ready for moments like this . A simple background is often best . but try to choose one that has some depth or texture . Here , the rough stone steps also act as a compositional counterweight to the position of the child's body The print was sepia toned ( see p . 162 ) . Nikkormat , 50 mm , 1/125 sec at f11 , FP4 .
Brother and sister With two small children as subjects , you will have to shoot several frames to get a result in which the expressions and positioning of both are acceptable . Here , the toy on the sofa acted as a magnet for the toddler , and his older sister was invited to join in the game . Use a low camera . position , on a level with your subjects , and set a wide aperture to put the background out of focus and make it unobtrusive . Pentax 6x7 , 105 mm . 1/125 sec at f5.6 , Agfachrome 50S .
