Children
Children are possibly the most rewarding por trait subjects of all . They possess a certain appealing innocence which often makes them quite unselfconscious . And the great majority of children enjoy being photographed . They like dressing - up , and will readily take up any position or pose you ask them to . Nevertheless , this willing cooperation is not entirely free - the photographer wins it by giving complete and undivided attention to the child . Children are keenly aware of the attitudes of adults , and they must feel that the photographer really likes them , and that he or she treats them as equal partners in the game of making pictures . Photographs of children should always be bright and cheerful , and therefore they must be well - lit . Use well - diffused lighting - either slightly overcast sun or artificial light of a similar quality , such as bounced flash or strong flood lighting . Indoors , make sure that the whole room is adequately lit , both in front of and behind the subject . Poorly - lit interiors rarely suit child studies . In general , keep technique as simple as possible , but try to be inventive in settings and arrangements . A standard lens is the simplest , most effective lens to use . A wide angle will give distortion problems , and the 5 shallow depth of field of a long lens makes a sharp result difficult when photographing sub ejects who will not stay still .
Working in north light V The available light for this picture was ideal . I took it . in a north - facing painter's studio with a glass roof and walls . The whole room was filled with a soft , beautifully - textured light . Nikkormat FT2 , 50 mm , 1/30 sec at f11 , FP4 .
Diffused daylight For delicate , soft skin texture , diffused daylight is unsurpassable . I took this shot early in the morning against a black backcloth , see diagram right , in a very well - lit room . White walls gave an overall light with hardly any shadows . Nikkormat FT , 50 mm , 1/30 sec at f8 , Kodachrome 25 .
Capturing expressions A Some boys refuse to be frivolous - they consider it beneath their dignity . A playful snapshot would have been entirely out of character for this child , so I tried to capture his usual solemn mood . Lighting was overcast daylight . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm , 1/60 sec at f1 1 , Agfachrome 50S .
Using a white background Whitewashed walls always make an excellent background they are brilliant white , yet textured . Diffused daylight from a large window lit the scene . Avoid direct sunlight - whenever possible choose overcast light instead . Hasselblad 500C , 80 mm . 1/60 sec at f8 , Agfachrome 50S .
An unusual background This girl was photographed in front of a painting of a Greek church . The shape of the painting blends well with her head and shoulders , giving a pleasing alternative to a plain background . Pentax 6 × 7 , 75 mm , 1/30 sec at f11 , Agfachrome 50L .
Using mirrors Mirrors are fun to use , and they can put a shy child at ease since you do not have to point the camera directly at him , see diagram below . The image in the mirror is at twice the distance of the mirror itself , so in order to get both mirror and subject sharp it is necessary to stop down . Pentax 6x7 , 75 mm . 1/30 sec at f16 . Ektachrome 200 .
Mother and child Effective " mother and child " studies depend on the projection of sincerity and complete naturalness . The best studies of this kind are usually shot by very close relations . It is important that there is no trace of artificiality , for the camera will reveal it . This picture was taken by the child's elder sister , who was able to capture a relaxed feeling . Nikkormat FT , 50 mm . 1/125 sec at f8 , FP4 .
