could be improved a nose that is a fraction too long , for example , or small wrinkles on the neck or under the eyes . The neck almost invariably shows age first , so you should use a scarf or carefully arranged lighting to create a shadow which will hide the problem area . To disguise a double chin , place the camera higher than the face . To subdue a large nose , position the camera below the level of the mouth . In general , keep any part which appears too large - as far away from the lens as possible , and try to emphasize anything which seems too small . To soften lines and enhance appearance , the technique of diffusion is invaluable . You will find soft focus attachments cheaper and more accessible than the specialist lenses . The degree of diffusion varies with the type of filter and also depends on the aperture of the lens - the smaller the f stop , the less diffusion , and vice versa .
Coping with eyeglasses Eyeglasses can be a problem , see top picture . They reflect any light source in front of them , and the reflections will hide the eyes . To avoid this , light the face at an angle , never from the front , see bottom picture . Place your main light to the side of the camera . Hard and soft lighting A A sharp lens and harsh lighting , like the direct flood and reflector used here , will emphasize wrinkles . The more flattering treatment produced by soft lighting , see facing page , is usually preferable . Pentax 6x7 . 105 mm . 1/15 sec at f11 , Plus - X .
Soft focus filter This portrait was taken . with a special diffusing filter . A good diffuser will hide small skin blemishes and make the hair look softer , while still retaining a certain amount of overall definition . Diffusion has been used for portraits since the end of the nineteenth century , when lens makers started to produce special lenses . You can still buy soft focus lenses today they give better definition than a filter but are more expensive . Pentax 6 × 7 , 105 mm , 1/30 sec at f8 , Plus - X .
Home - made diffuser A In the absence of a special filter , you can create improvised diffusion effects . For example , petroleum jelly smeared very thinly on UV filter will give a very soft effect which is easy to control simply add or remove jelly to increase or decrease diffusion . Some 15 denier nylon stretched over the lens is also very effective . Even simply breathing on your UV filter , as here , will work . Pentax 6 × 7 , 105 mm , 1/30 sec at f8 , Plus - X .
