Rim - lighting
Rim - lighting outlines the edges of a face or figure with a delicate line of light . It is one of the most striking , attractive ways of lighting the face . Natural rim - lighting will occur in bright sunlight , and gives a very beautiful effect . However , it cannot be arranged to order . The answer is to use studio rim - lighting consisting of a combination of two kinds of light – one strong , direct , high - contrast type , and the other diffused and non - directional . The domi nant light is the light which creates the rim the backlight . The position of this light is important - you must place it a little higher than the sitter's head . You can vary the dis tance of the light from the head - move it back to create an outline of the profile , or bring it forward to give a pool of light on the eye and cheek . You must always place it out of the camera's vision , otherwise you will get strong flare . The frontal light that illuminates the rest of the face should be weaker , quite flat and shadowless . Use either a diffuse , soft floodlight or , better still , an indirect light reflected off a white surface . For a special effect you can dis pense with the fill - in light altogether to give a rim - lit silhouette .
Natural rim - lighting . Natural light will also produce a rim - lit effect , although this is often more difficult to control . Here , strong sunlight was streaming through a window behind the sitter , lighting the face from an angle . I did not use any fill - in because I wanted to keep the rest of the face . dark . And I asked my subject to turn his head a little to catch the light on his eye and cheek . Pentax 6 × 7 , 105 mm . 1/60 sec at f16 , Tri - X .
Studio set - up ▷ The model's position provides a large area to show off rim - lighting effectively . I used a large spotlight and a reflector to provide fill - in so that no extra shadows were created . And I added another spotlight , see diagram below , to light the hair and back , creating a second , less pronounced rim effect . Pentax 6 × 7 , 105 mm , 1/30 sec at f16 , Tri - X .
