Making use of color
Effective composition in color involves under standing and using the two " opposing " groups of colors - the warm colors - red , orange and yellow - and the cool colors - blue , green and magenta . You can achieve a pleasing com bination of colors by using only one or other group in a picture , producing either warm or cool harmony .
But this is not the only possibility open to you - for a more lively effect you can make use of contrasting colors . The traditional rules of color composition , based on color pigments , define the three main colors - red , yellow and blue - as primaries . The primaries combine to create all other colors . The other three important colors are known as secondary or complemen tary colors because they are made up from two primaries orange from red and yellow , magenta from red and blue , and green from yellow and blue . Green is complementary to red , orange to blue , and magenta to yellow . If you pair a primary color with its complemen tary you will produce contrast . Color contrast highlights a dramatic , vibrant mood , whereas harmony conveys a calm , restful atmosphere . In a few cases the use of clashing colors can be worthwhile . For example , in the portrait on p . 29 green and red combine with shocking pink and yellow to produce a lively result .
The introduction of color does not alter the basic principles of composition significantly . You will still have to arrange the main shapes or the areas of strong , even tone within the frame of your picture in such a way that you retain a feeling of order and balance . But the shapes are
Bright colors The colors in this portrait of Lynn Seymour , the ballet dancer , give a restless , vigorous impression that reflects her personality and her preference for energetic , unorthodox dancing parts . Yellow the brightest color - is scattered throughout the image , giving it a strong sense of design . Hasselblad 500C , 80 mm , 1/60 sec at f5.6 , Agfachrome 50L .
Cool colors A Cool hues dominate this composition , giving the portrait a relaxed , restful air that fits in well with the girl's pose . The furnishings in the room and the sky outside the window are all in harmonizing tones of cool blue . Pentax 6x7 , 75 mm , 1/30 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 200 .
Warm colors ▷ Diffuse light , as well as being a good source of illumination for the face , also tends to reduce brightness of colors . Here , the soft , warm colors are mainly concentrated in two bold bands in the background . This picture was taken in a disused railway carriage lit by bright sun from one window and a crack in the door . Mamiyaflex C3 , 65 mm , 1/8 sec at f8 , Agfachrome 50S .
