"Family Matters" In Alaska, when raising your brood, timing is everything! Have chicks too early? Not enough food available. Too late? Not enough time to grow and fly south, or if you're a year-round resident, food sources can be problematic. Weather can also be fatal if you don't have your adult plumage grown in! I photographed these herring gull parents carefully watching over their chicks, feeding them just the right stuff to get them to adulthood! I loved the colorful lichen in the grasses, in addition to the cuteness of the two chicks!
