You should not expect to get the best print from each of the negatives in the roll . Some will be too dark , some will be too light , some may be too contrasty , or too soft . However , if the print shows most of the negatives printed reasonably well , it is acceptable . You can then make another print , modifying the exposure suitably and using the proper contrast grade of paper to get acceptable prints for the remaining negatives . In this way , if the roll of film was quite uniform as to exposure and contrast , one 8 x 10 print should show everything on the roll well enough to serve as a proof print . On the other hand , if the roll was not uniformly exposed , you may end up with two or perhaps three 8 x 10 prints . One may show most of the negatives printed properly , the second will show the denser negatives , and the third will show the thinner negatives .
This is a lot easier than trying to get perfect prints from each negative and will serve well enough to show the customer which view or composition is the best . Because film is cheap , photographers generally make a good many exposures of each subject , varying the lighting , the composition , the point of view and anything else they can think of . They then have a wide selection to choose from .
Even if no client is directly involved , the prints should be filed with the negatives . If , at some later date , you want to go back to your files to find them , it is much easier to identify them from the prints rather than from the negatives .
There are a good many methods of filing negatives and proof prints , and you will , undoubtedly , develop your own in time . However , to start with , the simplest is probably the best . In this case , merely number the envelopes containing the strips of film consecutively and write the same numbers on the proof prints . If you cut up your proof prints in strips , this makes a simple tie - in because each film strip will have the same number as the corresponding print strip . If you prefer to keep your proof prints on the 8 x 10 sheet , it will carry as many numbers as strips .
CONCLUSION
