THE STORYBOARD
The simpler commercials may be worked up as a sort of shooting script quite similar to the ones we have discussed in Assignment 19. With a script of this kind , the photographer has considerable freedom in the way he handles the camera and establishes his lighting .
In bigger and more expensive commercials , the shooting script may not be detailed enough to satisfy the producer and he is much more likely to work with a storyboard . A storyboard is actually a complete shooting script with a series of television screen shaped panels containing illustrations of the key scenes of the commercial . The illustrations , arranged in sequential order from beginning to end , may be an artist's interpretation of what the scenes should look like or they may be actual photographic illustrations . Beside or below each picture is typed the dialogue , instructions for music , sound effects , camera work and any special effects .
The storyboard sets up fairly definite requirements for the photographer to follow . If he feels that his photography can be improved by some changes , he must get approval from the advertising agency representative or directly from the client . He may use imagination in setting up the most effective lighting and working out the best composition for each scene but the basic plan of the storyboard must always be followed . The photographer of a commercial must always remember that all of his technical skills must be devoted to getting across the sales message of the client .

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORYBOARDS
Both storyboards that are illustrated here were created by a Peoria , Illinois advertising agency , Hall , Haerr , Peterson & Harney , Inc. , for local clients . Each was to be shown on the three small television stations located in the area .
Storyboard Number 1 was a 60 second commercial created for the First National Bank of Peoria . This is an institutional type of commercial in that it must sell the bank and its services to the public . The commercial was made by filming a number of stills . This very clever commercial used a live model and converted her face through a series of quick shots into a line drawing for the effects you see achieved . They also used 35mm pictures of the bank taken from several dramatic angles . This unusually intricate shooting script called for a minute breakdown of shots and so was on two boards . The pictures are separated here for illustration .
Storyboard Number 2 was a 30 second commercial produced live for the Peoria Savings and Loan Company . A live commercial is done at the television studio at the time it is presented . It is not done on film . They began by filming a board with " Peoria Savings " printed on it . The camera then did a dolly shot up and through the hole in the " O " in Peoria . A second camera then picked up the mother and son , the first camera picked up the mother and daughter and so forth until the last scene which showed the name of the savings company again . A wipe - out completed this very fast moving commercial . All of the commercial was contained on one storyboard .
