COMMERCIALS
This field provides by far the greatest opportunity for the motion picture photographer . Practically all commercials are filmed in whole or in part in the movie studio or on location . The life of a commercial is very short because the producers realize that the audience soon becomes tired of repetition and demands a change at rather frequent intervals . This , of course , creates a never ending demand for new commercials and the studios are kept busy turning them out . Opportunities in this field are not restricted to the larger cities as is so often the case in other types of motion picture photography . All stations assign some of their advertising time to spot announcements of a local nature , and this affords an excellent opportunity for a wide awake photographer to add a well paying side line , making TV commercials , to his general practice of photography .

SPECIAL FEATURES AND DOCUMENTARIES
The motion picture photographer approaches the problem of making a special feature film or documentary in much the same way that the photojournalist attacks the problem of making a picture story . The end result is the same - a story in pictures , although in one case the pictures are still , and in the other they are in motion . Television uses a great number of such feature films , although the general public may not be aware of that fact because they are seldom broadcast on prime time . If you watch the TV programs , you will soon . realize how many good features and documentaries are used throughout the day , particularly on Sunday when broadcasters make an effort to raise the level of daytime broadcasting .
Here , too , local stations in the smaller cities make good customers . Part of their broadcast time is devoted to local programs and a high quality local program will give the photographer favorable publicity which can be far more valuable than any advertising he can afford to buy .
The American TV audience is highly interested in sports . Documentaries on sports , such as the film clip on drag racing shown here , are constantly being sought by TV stations . Courtesy of WLS - TV
A documentary normally has a narrator . In some docu mentaries , the narrator's voice is heard but he is never seen . In others , he is seen at the beginning and throughout the film as he explains and guides you through the sub ject matter . Here the camera crew is preparing to film the narrator on location . Note the slate board in front of the narrator . This is filmed to show what scene and take is being shot .

NEWS
The impartial reporting of news events is universally conceded to be television's outstanding achievement . While some of the bigger news events are covered live by television camera crews , in most cases it is the movie photographer who is assigned to the job . His equipment is smaller , more portable and does not require the tremendous amount of auxiliary equipment which is associated with the television camera . A good 16mm camera designed for heavy duty use by the commercial photographer is all that is required in most instances . If light is inadequate , an assistant carrying one or two portable tungsten - halogen lights will suffice . Here again there is a fine opportunity for the photographer living in one of the smaller cities which has a local broadcasting station . Such stations are very much interested in local news coverage .

EDUCATION
The launching of the first Sputnik compelled our leading educators to take a long hard look at education in the United States . This resulted in a rather drastic revision of educational methods and techniques . A number of educational television stations were put on the air and television as an aid to teaching both in the school and at home became an accepted factor in our broadened concept of education . Some of the broadcast programs had the direct teaching approach in which the subject was covered by a lecturer in much the same manner as in our schools , but a large part of it consisted of educational material of general interest .
Educational films are normally done on a low budget . They are then shot on 16mm film with semiprofessional equipment . An increasing number are now being shot on Super 8 film . In many instances , the cameraman doubles as producer and director . Here we see two educational movies being filmed . One will explain how concrete is made and the other will acquaint the public with the different concrete forms available for construction . Courtesy of the Portland Cement Assoc .
to adults as well as to students and it was presented as entertaining and interesting information , rather than as a formal lecture . Much of this material is filmed and is made available in that form to other stations on the educational television networks as well as to local commercial stations .
We have given you but a few of the more common uses of motion picture photography in television . Actually there is no limit to such use . Anything that can be filmed can be broadcast , and anything that can be broadcast can be filmed . The interdependence of these two media is complete .
In this Assignment , we will continue where we left off in Assignment 19 , but our approach will be more professional in nature . We cannot hope to cover all of television , but we can discuss in some detail the principal fields of television in which the motion picture photographer might be particularly interested , and we will discuss each of these fields from the point of view of their use in television . Bear in mind , however , that most of what we tell you will apply to commercial movie making in general , whether the end use is television or commercial .
