ADDING SOUND TO YOUR MOVIES
The addition of sound will greatly improve any movie . There are quite a number of ways in which sound can be added ; in this Assignment we will discuss the two which are most adaptable to the showing of home movies . A fuller discussion of this subject is contained in the next Assignment .
The first of these is through the use of a tape recorder ; the second by adding a magnetic sound track to the film itself . In either case , the film must first be completed , including all editing and titling . Then project it or run it through the viewer , making careful notes of the type of music which would be most appropriate to each scene . Also note the scene length and any commentary , either at full length or , if you are a good extemporaneous speaker , in note form . Then make the tape recording of both the voice and background music on your tape recorder . Time it carefully so it matches the picture . The commentary may have to be timed from your notes . If your projector is not extremely quiet , its sound may be picked up by the microphone .
When you have your sound taped , you simply have to decide upon some visual cue in the film which will tell you exactly when to start the sound , or a cue in the sound tape which will tell when to start the film . If the two are started properly and operated at the correct speed , the sound and the film will remain synchronized throughout the showing .
To put the sound directly onto the film itself , make up the finished edited film and send it to one of the laboratories which are equipped to put a very narrow stripe of magnetic sound track along the margin of the film . You can then record your complete sound tape onto this sound track while the film is being run through the projector . Of course , this method requires the use of a sound projector ( such as the one shown in Figure 34 ) . A regular silent projector has no means of picking up the sound from the track . For the best results , the picture should be taken and shown at the standard sound speed of 24 frames per second .
In commercial movies such as those made to sell a product , teach a class or illustrate a professional travel talk , the movie is usually shot on a negative material so that a number of prints can be run off . The sound is usually taped on professional tape equipment specifically designed for movie work . In making the prints , the sound track is taken off the tape , converted to optical sound , and an optical sound track is printed on the positive film alongside the picture . Optical sound will be discussed in more detail in the next Assignment .

CONCLUSION
In this Assignment , we have covered the basics of motion picture photography . If you are interested in making your own movies , primarily as a serious amateur , this Assignment will give you all the information you need to start you on your way to making movies which will be a cut or two above the average . If you want to break into professional movie making , this Assignment will start you off on the right foot . If you want to pick up a little extra money by making a few travelogs of your vacations and show them for a fee to local clubs and social groups , this Assignment covers the necessary essentials .
The field of motion pictures , however , is a very large one . To cover all the aspects of commercial movie making , even if we exclude entertainment movies such as those made in Hollywood , would require a full course of study and not just a lesson or two in a course that is primarily designed for the still photographer . We can , however , discuss in some length the one phase of professional movie making which has the greatest interest and which offers the widest opportunities . This is the field of movie making for television , and it will be covered in Assignment 20 .
