CAMERA ANGLES
Just as it is important to avoid monotony by frequently changing the camera distance , it is also important to change the camera viewpoint . It may appear at first thought that you look at everything from eye level , head on , but this is not entirely true . Many objects are looked at from above or below . A city skyscraper , for example , is seen head on from a distance only . When you are near it , you always look up . A movie of a skyscraper from such a viewpoint can be very dramatic .
To reverse the situation , street scenes taken from a skyscraper make very interesting pictures . A waterfall shot from below looking steeply up or from above looking down , appears much more exciting than when photographed from the usual position .
There are many reasons for the selection of unusual and original camera angles . One is to give variety . We have seen how to make a movie more interesting by breaking it up into a number of short scenes and by changing the camera distance repeatedly for variety . Similar results can be obtained by changing the angle of view occasionally . In Figure 20 , the downward shot of the street artist is infinitely more interesting than a more conventional view . By the same token , the stark simplicity of Figure 21 is made all the more effective because of the unusual point of view used by the photographer .
It isn't necessary to look for unusual or out - of - the - way subjects for good angle shots . They can be just as effective when used on everyday material . If you are filming a golf game , try some ground level shots of the golf ball being teed off to add spice to your picture .
Another legitimate use of the angle shot is to create a mood . A picture of a modern streamlined train taken from a normal angle may be realistic , but it is hardly original . On other hand , the same train shot from ground level as it roars by seems to loom up as a tremendous symbol of power and speed . The mood of Figure 22 which shows the Golden Gate Bridge is greatly enhanced by the high viewpoint of the camera which captures the fog rolling in to cut the bridge tower in two .
Still another use of the unusual camera angle is to avoid objectionable backgrounds . If you want to take an outdoor portrait and the background is bad ,
Figure 20 The downward angle . used here results in an unusual and interesting point of view . Photo by J. Oppenheim
try shooting from a low viewpoint . This will outline the subject against the sky and eliminate the undesirable background . If the portrait is of a child and the background is so high that this procedure is not practical , you may be able to raise the camera and shoot down so the ground becomes the background . If the subject is on a well - kept lawn , it will make quite an acceptable background .
Figure 21 Don't hesitate to point the camera upward if this results in interesting action .
Figure 22 A mood shot such as this scene of the Golden Gate Bridge seen through a layer of San Francisco fog could be used to lend authen ticity to a travelogue .
