SHOOTING THE MOVIE
Have you ever watched an outstanding home movie ; one that opens with a powerful musical theme while the camera pans a breathtaking landscape ? When the title and credits appear , there is animation and life . A well organized narration accompanies the film , and as the story unfolds you see slow - motion action shots , dissolves , and other special effects . Home movies like this are rare indeed . If you have seen one , you are fortunate .
In the following pages you will learn how to make dramatic movies of your own . You will learn how to use close - ups and camera angles successfully . You will study special effects including fast and slow motion , fades and dissolves , dolly shots , animation , and you will learn when and where to use them . Editing procedures and techniques are discussed , as well as titling and adding sound to your films .
THE CLOSE - UP
The value of the close - up cannot be overemphasized . Hollywood , a great believer in close - ups , made the technique famous throughout the world . Although the movie capitol often uses a close view of an actor's face for drama ( see Figure 19 ) , the commercial photographer most often uses a close - up to show detail rather than facial expression ..
Figure 19 An extreme close - up of the subject's face always provides a great deal of impact .
The need for close - ups is all the greater with 8mm film which does not give the clarity and sharpness possible with professional 35mm movie equipment . If you stop to think for a moment , you will realize that the close - up is as thoroughly natural and familiar in film life as in real life . Every time you get within arm's length of anything , you get a close - up of it . When you shake hands with a friend , you see him close up . When you pick up your pen to write a letter , you see the pen in a close - up view . What is more natural than the liberal use of close - ups in your movies ?
Let us consider our garden sequence again to see how the close - ups fit easily and naturally into the scheme of things . Our first close - up is Scene 3. Dad is examining the rose bush . A close - up at this point is essential for the fine detail necessary to show the insect - damaged leaves . If the continuity and action are well thought out , no title is needed to explain the action . Without the close - up , the following action would not be self - explanatory and a title would be required . A title is always a foreign element , which breaks the chain of thought and results in poor continuity .
Whenever you make a movie sequence or work up a shooting script , always watch for opportunities to add close - ups . This doesn't mean you should incorporate close - ups just to have them in the picture . A close - up is an extremely strong device . Use it only for important elements of your sequence . If wasted on non - essentials , it loses its effectiveness .
USING CLOSE - UPS EFFECTIVELY . Let us go back to our auto trip to see how close - ups may be used effectively . When you take an automobile trip , you always study road maps , read road signs , check the mileage on your speedometer , watch the gas gauge , watch the gas station attendant add gas , water and oil , look at the gas pump meter as it registers your purchase , and hand money to the gas station attendant . You do these things no matter where you go on your trip . They are interesting bits of real life action , since they are common to you and to the audience which will see your movies later . Close - ups of these and similar small bits of action when spotted throughout the picture make it ring true , and set it apart from the usual amateur travelog of disconnected country landscapes and city street scenes .
