THREE PHASES OF PHOTOJOURNALISM
We can more readily understand photojournalism if we classify it into major groups . These are :
1. The Picture Sequence
2. The Picture Story
3. The Picture Essay
While all three types of pictures meet the general qualifications we have just discussed , there are nevertheless important differences among these three . Generally they require a somewhat different approach and they are used by different clients . If you understand their basic differences , your pictures will be more successful and you will find a more ready market for them . Let us , therefore , spend some time in studying them and their differences .
THE PICTURE SEQUENCE
Essentially , the picture sequence tells a very simple story . It may actually be part of a more complete picture story or picture essay . Very frequently , the sequence expands on one element of a picture story or essay by showing it in several ways or conditions , thus providing a fuller explanation by the fundamental principle of repetition with variation . As its name implies , a sequence tells its story by a direct step - by - step method . A commonly used sequence is that showing a prominent personality caught in an off moment engaged in performing a gesture or a trick of expression with which he has become identified . A sequence of three pictures showing the beginning , the middle and the end of the gesture or expression can be extremely effective either in a report of the personality , or of some event in which he takes on a prominent role .
Sequence pictures are at their best when they deal with simple , relatively unimportant matters . Good subjects are children building a snowman , a famous . baseball player taking his turn at bat , a Boy Scout trying to build a fire on a camping trip , or a tennis player serving the ball . In all of these , there is a strong element of progression , which is the basic requirement of a good sequence . You can think of the sequence as an episode , and it can be presented either as a separate unit on its own merits , or as part of a more complete story or essay .
THE PICTURE STORY
The picture story is really the heart of photojournalism . It is more complete . and all embracing than the sequence , or even the essay . It , therefore , demands a much fuller coverage and this , in turn , necessitates the expenditure of more time and effort . The picture story is a report in picture form of an event , a place , or at situation . It can cover any field of activity , human or otherwise . Photojournalism is just as much at home in the field of science as in the field of sports , in reporting social trends as in reporting the life of the bumble bee . The only limits are those imposed by man's imagination and his ingenuity .

The picture story must have a central theme or subject around which the individual pictures are built . Without this central theme , you do not have a picture story , but a collection of pictures which dissipate their force by leading off in all directions . The central theme of a story corresponds to the plot of a picture in words , and no story is complete without a plot . The order in which the individual pictures are presented in a picture story must have a logical purpose , but that purpose need not necessarily be chronological or sequential . We will touch on this subject in more detail later .
THE PICTURE ESSAY
The picture essay , like the picture story , has a broad approach to its subject . However , the essay is more interpretative than factual , although you must be just as careful in presenting its facts as you would in the picture story . The essay is generally broader in its theme than the story , and it gives the photographer much greater freedom in his choice and use of pictures . The picture story is primarily a
reporter's story whereas the essay can present the reporter's interpretation or his personal point of view rather than an impartial statement of facts . Essays seldom have the impact of , let us say , good news picture stories , but they can be just as effective in getting an idea across .
