THE USE OF MODELS
Models are used very extensively in all types of commercial photography Practically any manufactured product , whether it is a piece of heavy machinery , cooking utensil , or the latest in women's gowns , can be shown to better advantage if it is shown in use . This , of course , means that a model is involved . The model may be shown completely , as when a housewife is pictured using a vacuum cleaner , or in part when just a pair of hands is included in modeling gloves . Nevertheless , the model contributes in an important way to the success of the picture . We are attracted to people much more than we are to inanimate objects , and the photographer takes advantage of this attraction if he includes a model in his picture .
Figures 87 through 90 are good exam ples of the effective use of models to sell a product .
Another very important advantage of the model is that he or she shows the function or use of the product and that , too , makes an important contribution to its saleability . People buy things not for the things themselves , but for what they can do or give to the purchaser , and showing this use by an attractively and appropriately dressed model increases the impact of the picture to a high degree .

Models may be either professionals or amateurs or a little of both . There are model agencies in the larger cities who maintain a register of professional models .. The photographer needing a particular type of model simply gets in touch with the agency , outlines his requirements in as much detail as seems necessary , and asks that one be sent for the job . If the job is an important and well paying one , he may ask that several models be sent for an interview so that he can select the one that seems to him to work out best for the job .

In the smaller communities where professional models are not easy to find , the photographer can still operate quite successfully with amateur models . Members of his family or of his friends ' families may often be pressed into service . If young people are needed , students of local colleges or high schools are often available . If there are any local amateur or semi - professional theater groups , they make an excellent source for models . All of these sources of amateur talent are , of course , available in the larger cities as well . In addition , students going to charm schools to attain poise and the social graces often make excellent yet inexpensive models .
In choosing a model , it is of the utmost importance that you get somebody who fits the picture to be made . Tall , exotic models might be ideal for showing off a gown to the best advantage , but sadly out of place in demonstrating some kitchen equipment . A rugged outdoor type of male model would be just right in the cab of a truck or tractor , but hardly effective as a demonstrator of children's toys .
If a model is to be used only in part , as for illustrating a pair of gloves or wearing a pair of shoes , be sure that her hands or her feet are unusually attractive . The rest of her body may be as unphotogenic as you can imagine , but so long as it is not included in the picture , it is of no concern . By the same token , outstanding facial beauty is not the advantage it would seem to be on first thought . Actually , a girl with good regular features and no facial blemishes and an attractive figure so that she can be photographed from any angle and in any pose , makes the ideal model provided , of course , that she has the ability to appear graceful in any position .
The ability to work with a model to get the most out of her capabilities is very important . By and large , models are individuals and they function on a free lance basis . They are not employees in the usual sense , rather they are associates with you in the making of a good picture . If you expect them to contribute their abilities to the success of the picture , you must handle them with proper consideration and tact . You do not order a model to do this or that you ask or suggest .
If she is a professional , she has a pretty good idea of the basics of posing , how to achieve a graceful attitude , and at least the rudiments of facial expression if any acting is required . If you explain how you want her to pose in broad terms , you can then leave the actual posing up to her . If it isn't exactly as you wanted , suggest changes or modifications . A good professional model requires hardly more . than a hint of what she is to do . An amateur model will require much more detailed instructions , of course , but such directions must be given with due : consideration .
The creative photographer is often working under strong tension . He may start out with one idea and change his mind several times while the set is being made up and the model posed . This does not necessarily mean he doesn't know . what he is doing . It is merely his way of working . If that happens to be your way , you must make a strong effort not to be rough or brusque in your handling of the model . Your directions to her should be clear and precise so that she realizes you know what you are doing , and are in full command of the situation .
MODEL RELEASES . When you use a model , whether professional or amateur , be sure to obtain a signed release permitting you to use the picture for commercial purposes . Many law suits have been instituted against commercial photographers who neglected to take this important precaution . In established studios , it is an invariable rule that the model must sign a release before receiving payment for the job . A suggested form for this model release is given on Page 72 :
