PHOTOGRAPHING FURNITURE
Figure 60 Quality furniture is often sold through catalogues , brochures or photographs such as this . In such cases , the technical quality of the photographs must be of the highest order . Every detail must be easily seen and the wood pattern or grain clearly evi dent . All accessories , such as the rug on the floor , or the piece of statuary on the cabinet , must be in perfect taste , and the lighting should be brilliant , but not harsh .

The photographer of furniture must have style sense . He must show the overall product clearly - its shape , its style . Yet he must capture the pattern or weave of the fabric ... the grain of the wood or the flashing gleam of the metal . A good photographer of furniture is in essence a fashion photographer . He must capture the " feel " of the furniture for the customer . The more expensive the furniture , the more dramatic the picture may be .

Small items such as lamps , end tables , cabinets , clocks , and the like are more likely to be photographed by themselves against a simple background which might include a few mood provoking accessories or against a neutral background which may or may not be blocked out later .
Lines of furniture may be combined into room settings . These would be placed in a room setting with accessories placed artistically around to create mood . The skill of the photographer in helping to create these settings and to capture the " feel " of the furniture would have much to do with the success of these pictures .
Most photographers who have large studios set aside corners or other sections to serve as kitchen , living or dining room interiors for their furniture clients .
