CHURCHES AND CATHEDRALS
The treatment of churches and cathedrals should usually be such as to pro duce a lofty , heightened effect . Good taste and dignity are absolutely essential . Avoid the bizarre or dramatic except in very unusual cases . Your composition will almost invariably be vertical , since this is the type of composition that most strongly suggests dignity and lofty repose .
BUILDINGS AT NIGHT
There are a number of reasons why it may be best to photograph certain buildings at night . Ordinary buildings , when properly illuminated at night , often take on dramatic and interesting aspects . Neighboring buildings and cluttered - up surroundings are subdued or eliminated entirely , since they are in such deep shadow as not to affect the photographic film . In business districts , so crowded during the day that it is impossible to take satisfactory pictures because of interference from pedestrian and vehicular traffic , you can always find a quiet time of night when traffic has thinned down enough to permit photography .
If the building can be floodlighted , arrange to have it done , since this will greatly enhance the value of your photograph . Lights should also be turned on in all the rooms having windows in the field of view of the camera . This may take considerable planning in advance in the case of a large office or industrial building , but it is worth all the trouble it may cause .
There are no hard and fast rules as to exposure , and the wise photographer will do well to bracket his exposures to be sure of getting the best possible result . The best exposure for night photographs is one that produces plenty of deep , interesting shadows , and yet gives printable detail in the important highlight areas . An underexposed negative will have very little detail even in the lighted areas . On the other hand , if the photograph is so full of detail that it is hard to tell whether the exposure was made by day or by night , you can be certain it is badly . overexposed .
Since night pictures have such large areas that are almost completely black , you should print for the blacks . Expose the print long enough to give good , rich blacks , and develop for the maximum length of time indicated in the manufacturer's instructions for the paper and developer you are using .
A striking type of night picture is the one taken at twilight , particularly with floodlighted buildings . This gives you enough over - all detail to prevent the shadows from being too empty and produces a dramatic sky that still is lighter than the building so that the building itself stands out strongly . The floodlighting and the lighted windows make a very strong pattern .
The exposure in such twilight shots is very important . If the floodlighting is not strong enough to register against the daylight , set up your camera on a substantial tripod and expose long enough to get the right sky density . Then without changing film , cock the shutter again carefully to make sure the camera . does not move and wait until the sun is down so that the floodlighting predominates . Expose again , this time long enough to reproduce the building properly . Many dramatic twilight pictures have been made by double exposing in this manner .
Night scenes are often best if photographed when the air is slightly hazy or just after a rain when the ground is still wet . The haze or mist in the air reflects a certain amount of light into the shadows , so they don't photograph quite so empty . Wet streets produce effective pictures because of the many interesting reflections .
The six photographs on this and the facing page show the progressive steps in the construction of a skyscraper with round twin towers - Marina City of Chicago - from the architect's model to the finished skyscraper .
