POSING HANDS
If the hands are to be included in the portrait , pose them so their sides are presented to the camera rather than the full width of the back or palm . Keep them as far back as possible , never much nearer the camera than the subject's head . If they are too far forward , they will appear overly large and prominent . The fingers should not be fully extended , for that usually looks stiff and unnatural . Neither should they be closed into the palm of the hand . This would make the hand look too much like a clenched fist . Never photograph a hand with all the fingers doubled at the second joint . This gives the unpleasant suggestion of amputated fingers .
To avoid giving the hands too much prominence , it is usually best to let them go a little darker than the face . This can be done by shading them with a head screen ( the use of which will be described a little later in this Assignment ) ,
by " feathering " the light ( turning it slightly so that the hands are just outside the bright beam ) , or by burning them in when making the enlargement . In Figure 1 , the subject's left hand is printed in quite deeply , so that apparent amputation of the fingers is not noticeable .
Figure 1 Subject's left hand has been put in deep shadow to de - emphasize its awkward pose .
EYEGLASSES
A subject wearing glasses usually presents a number of problems . If glasses are worn at all times , don't remove them for the portrait . This will change the subject's appearance materially . In addition , the eyes will have a strained and unnatural expression .
Keep the lighting as simple as possible . Experiment with the position of the lights and the angle of the head until there are no reflections from the glasses . If this cannot be done , you may have to retouch the negative or spot the print .
If the lenses are quite strong , they will distort the eyes seen through them . This is usually more apparent when the head is turned at too great an angle . Because of this , most portraits of people with strong glasses are taken almost full face , as shown in Figure 2 .
CLOTHING
In every portrait , clothing requires careful attention . Men are often careless in the way they arrange their neckties and handkerchiefs , or the way they fill their coat pockets to bulging . It is the business of the photographer to check all details of clothing carefully to make sure every item is arranged properly and that there are no unsightly bulges or creases .
Figure 2 Full - face portrait is usually best to hide distortion of eyes created by wearing of strong glasses
Women's clothing is much more difficult to arrange . Because of the greater variety of garments , it is not possible to give specific points to check . However , you should watch for unsightly bulges and creases and make sure the clothes hang gracefully with smooth , freely - running folds . Remember , women's styles change radically and often . Hats are particularly bad in this respect . Avoid photographing a woman wearing a hat if at all possible . No matter how attractive the hat may now appear , you may be sure it will be outmoded next year and appear ridiculous in three years .
