POSING THE HEAD
The angle at which the head is held - tipped forward or slightly backward - will affect the facial appearance of the subject to a considerable degree . If , for example , the head is tilted back , the nose will be shortened and the mouth and chin emphasized . In posing the subject or in selecting the best point of view from which the subject should be photographed , choose the side of the face and the angle of view which will tend to bring out the good points and hide the defects . If a subject has a very short , uptilted nose , it would be a mistake to take the portrait with the head tilted back or with the camera low .
A pose with the head lowered just a little and with the lens a little higher than usual ( somewhat higher than the chin ) will not actually change nose length but it will make the nose appear longer . On the other hand , a man with a very long nose should keep his head well up , and you should set the camera at chin height or possibly a little lower . The foreshortening thus achieved will make his nose look shorter . If photographed from above , the nose might almost cover the upper lip and appear much larger than it really is .
As a general rule , when the head is turned at a slight angle to the shoulders , you get a suggestion of alertness . The head should be held naturally with the eyes looking slightly upward . The subject should sit up fairly straight to avoid a round - shouldered appearance .
In making head and shoulder portraits , the head usually should be so placed in the picture area that the point of the chin is just below the center of the picture . If you are shooting a three - quarter or profile view , there should also be slightly more space in front of the head than behind it . If there is more space in back , the subject will appear to be moving out of the picture .
MINIMIZING FEATURE DEFECTS
The correction of some prominent defects or irregularity in the features of your subject will usually determine the final position of the head . A large , prominent nose appears less prominent in a three - quarter view . Protruding ears appear normal if the picture is taken with the camera at the same height as the subject's face . A side or three - quarter view is best . Never use a full , front view of such a subject ; the ears will stand out like sails in the wind .
A strong chin on a woman is usually undesirable . To overcome this , tilt the head slightly downward . This will help to de - emphasize the chin . On the other hand , if the chin is weak , have the subject elevate her head slightly .
A profile shot of a girl or young woman looking downward helps to convey a feeling of modesty ; looking upward gives a feeling of an awareness of life , depending upon the youth , facial expression and clothes worn by the subject . Profile shots are relatively rare ; few people have the necessary beauty or strength of line for a satisfactory profile pose . However , where these do exist , a profile portrait is the more effective because of its rarity .
The portrait photographer finds angle shots very useful in correcting physical points of weakness . If the subject has a round , puffy face or heavy jowls , never photograph him full face , but always at a slight angle . You can often get the effect of the full - face pose by having him move his head to the required angle and then turn his eyes to look directly at the camera .
Full , front lighting tends to make a face look larger and rounder . This is often an advantage when photographing children . It is not so popular for adults who are not interested in larger , rounder faces . Front , soft lighting , however , does hide wrinkles and certain facial blemishes . On the other hand , it also takes away character , which is brought out by interesting facial lines . As a result , broad , front lighting is seldom used for character studies .
The nose can be made to appear longer by tilting the head slightly downward . This also makes the forehead look larger . Raising the camera has the same effect , but also shortens and broadens the neck and body , which is usually undesirable .
